WordPress Confusion - BloggingTricks.com

If you're a careful reader of this Blog, you've seen me post about Blogger and WordPress.
While I usually suggest that brand new bloggers start with the free Google-owned blogging platform called Blogger, I also use and very much like WordPress. But there is some confusion about WordPress and I will try to clear it up with this post.
There are actually two WordPress sites. WordPress.com is a free blogging platform. Just as you can with Blogger, you can sign up for a free blog and WordPress.com will host it and provide you with all the basic front-end and back-end blog management tools you need to get started. But there is another WordPress site and that is called WordPress.org. This second site is the home to the free open source software project. This is where your Internet Service Provider or web hosting company can go to download the WordPress server suite. This provides more access to the power features of the WordPress platform that are not generally available on the free hosted site, WordPress.com.
So this is the key. If you want a free blog and you want to let someone else do all the work of hosting it and administering it, go to WordPress.com. If you own your own web server or you want to contract with a company to operate a server on your behalf and you want all the full power and functionality that WordPress has to offer, go to WordPress.org and download the WordPress Open Source Project.
